Protocol for treating osteoarthritis in the small joints of the hands and fingers. Due to the superficial nature of hand joints, both red and NIR wavelengths are effective. Treatment is applied to each affected joint individually.

Protocol Parameters

ConditionOsteoarthritis of Hands
Wavelengths660nm, 810nm, 830nm, 850nm
Dosage3-6 J per joint
Irradiance50-100 mW/cm²
Duration30-60 seconds per joint
Frequency3-5x per week for 4-8 weeks
Body Zonehands
Evidence LevelModerate

Mechanism of Action

PBM reduces synovial inflammation, decreases pain nerve sensitization, and promotes cartilage protection in the superficial joints of the hands. The thin tissue coverage over hand joints allows excellent light penetration at both red and NIR wavelengths.

Key Studies

Treatment Tips

  • *Treat each affected joint individually for 30-60 seconds
  • *Include both dorsal and palmar sides of joints
  • *Hand exercises and heat therapy can complement PBM
  • *Torch/pen-style devices work well for individual joints
